Liverpool have made an enquiry for Danny Wilson, the Rangers central defender, as Rafael Benitez attempts to restructure his squad for next season.
The Liverpool manager has already put a deal in place to sign Milan Jovanovic, the Serbia forward, on a Bosman transfer this summer, subject to a work permit being secured, and the Spaniard has now turned his attentions to Wilson.
The Clydesdale Bank Premier League leaders are desperate to keep the 18-year-old and have opened talks with him about a new contract, but Wilson is yet to commit to an extension.
Martin Bain, the Rangers chief executive, confirmed that an initial approach has been made by the Anfield club but insisted that he hopes Wilson can be persuaded to remain in Scotland.
Wilson, who has made 22 appearances this season, has a year of his deal to run and Walter Smith, the manager, had expected him to sign a new contract this week.
"We've had many discussions - and there is a schedule that sits with his agent at the moment," Bain said.
"Two English Premier League clubs approached us in January and since then I have had the odd discussion and we have seen people coming along to watch our players.
"Danny is a young boy and has done well but I'm sure Walter would say he has a lot to learn and I would like to see him commit himself to Rangers."
