Liverpool in three-way fight for Germany star Hummels
All English eyes were not just fixed on Harry Kane and Dele Alli last night. At least three sets were watching Mats Hummels as well.
Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea are all eyeing the German defender as a potential big money recruit this summer.
Pep Guardiola has already indicated he would like the Borussia Dortmund skipper as a possible replacement for the injury troubled Vincent Kompany when he takes over at the Etihad. Or, indeed, just to bolster City's defence next season.
But Hummels former Borussia boss, Jurgen Klopp, who was also watching Germany's left back Jonas Hector last night, is now targeting a player he knows all about from their time together at Dortmund.
And with Chelsea needing a top flight replacement for John Terry next season Hummels will be the No 1 target of they fail to persuade Everton to let them have John Stones.
The Borussia skipper, who moved to Dortmund from Bayern Munich in 2008, played a pivotal role in Germany's World Cup triumphs in 2014, when he scored the goal that knocked France out of the tournament.
Hummels has also been the cornerstone of Borussia's recent successes.
As it stands, a guaranteed first team place at Anfield with his old mentor, rather than a possible stand-in role at Manchester City, would probably be the 28-year-old German's first choice.
Chelsea's absence from any European competition next season is likely to make Stamford Bridge Hummel's third one if Borussia decide to take the financial bait.
