Jürgen Klopp: I'm really happy, but we can still improve
Jürgen Klopp declared himself 'really happy' with Liverpool's dominant 6-1 victory over Watford at Anfield, but the boss believes there are still areas in which his side can improve.
A scintillating attacking display, which featured a Sadio Mane brace and goals from Philippe Coutinho, Emre Can, Roberto Firmino and Georginio Wijnaldum, saw the Reds surge into top spot in the Premier League this afternoon.
Klopp was asked about his side's display and whether being top of the table will affect them in his post-match press conference, and you can read a full transcript of his answers below.
On the level of the performance…
I'm really happy actually. It was a good performance, absolutely, against a difficult opponent. In the last few games they had three clean sheets and not lucky clean sheets. We knew about the challenge and we tried to do the right things in training and prepare the team for this. Obviously it worked, together with the confidence we obviously have, and the skills and the attitude of the players. So it worked out today. The strange thing in this game is that we had the biggest chance before we started scoring. But we stood in the game and did the right things. We were really concentrated in the first half – it was really good. In the second half, how it is, the break was better for the opponent than it was for us. You need to stay concentrated, we were concentrated and we scored more goals. That's OK. But we wasted a little bit of energy with balls which we gave them too easily. We had to then defend really lively with a lot of running, which is not necessary when you are patient enough. But we are still early in our development and there are a lot of things we can improve. Watford deserved the goal because they created a few chances and Loris was really busy, which in a game you win 6-1 is not really likely. So, a lot of things we can improve, but a lot of things worked really well today. It was a good performance on the pitch and on the stands, so it was a really nice afternoon.
On the pressure of being top of the league…
If somebody thinks being one point ahead after 11 matchdays is a big sign for the rest of the season, I can't help this person. Sorry! We stay cool, nothing happened. It's the best position I can imagine actually, but really nothing else happened. We didn't speak one word before the game – we knew already that Arsenal drew against Tottenham – but we didn't speak one word about the possibility of being top of the table. The only thing you can do is to work and stay concentrated, because a lot of different things could happen in the next few weeks and months. How positive they are is up to us, actually.
On his side playing with the pressure of being top…
There's no pressure after 11 matchdays – absolutely no pressure. We saw Chelsea playing yesterday, quite impressive. We saw City playing Barcelona, quite impressive. Man United, never write them off. Tottenham, a good side… there are a lot of really good teams around and you can play a really good season, but when they are better – which is possible because they're really not bad – then you could be fifth or sixth and nobody would be really happy. So, stay cool, take the things like they are, playing your best football and win football games – that's the only thing we can do. When I came here, I asked for time, patience, belief and a lot of things. Now after 11 matchdays, everyone is asking for guarantees but they are not there. There are no guarantees. The only thing we have is a pretty good football team, so let's try to use it.
On Liverpool having had 13 different goalscorers in 14 matches this season and that showing they're a team…
It shows especially that they all know where the goal is, and try to score and do all these things. It's nice to see. We played a really good match today and we had really good players on the bench, in a really good shape. Daniel came on the pitch and had outstanding good moments in his 20 minutes, Divock's in a good way, Alberto Moreno did really well, Gini was so close. Centre-halves – Dejan is ill, so it was really a close race between Ragnar and Lucas, and the young boys on the bench are in a good moment. So that's the only possibility, the only way which really works. The only pressure that's allowed is the pressure we make ourselves with the performances in training and then use them on the pitch. Until now it worked pretty well, but that's already passed.
On whether he believes his team can play even better…
We have to. I know how it sounds, it's not that we have to score more goals or something. I'm really happy that we didn't score more because what would this have meant? We could've scored more. But different moments – you saw when we lost a little bit of concentration, that's normal with this kind of result. Keeping the ball is the best defending, we gave the ball a little bit too easy away and had to run a lot to get the ball back. There was one situation with three midfield players around the 18-yard box, losing the ball and we needed three minutes to get the ball back. That's a waste of energy, but you don't have it too often when you're 5-0 in the lead, so how can you be prepared for this? We could've done better in these moments, but of course there's not a lot of things to criticise. Good, all good.
On Loris Karius' performance…
Good. I know everybody is expecting perfection from the first day when you come in as a new player. He can improve a lot but he has all the skills we need for a goalkeeper. But of course being at Liverpool is quite impressive, playing in this stadium is quite impressive. We all expect that 22, 23, 24-year-old boys are ready for everything in the world. I know he can improve but he's already in a good way. Together with Simon, we have a really wonderful goalkeeper couple if you like. They push really hard and that will help both of them, for sure.
