Henderson: Saturday showed we're on the right track
Liverpool's strong performance in drawing 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Saturday proved this team is on the right track, according to Jordan Henderson.
The Reds walked off the pitch having earned a point from the Barclays Premier League contest but aware that it might have been three had they converted any of a number of chances.
Philippe Coutinho had put the home side ahead with a precise finish in front of the Kop, only for Harry Kane to lash an equaliser beyond Simon Mignolet 12 minutes later.
Both teams had opportunities for a winner but it ultimately ended level, leaving the Liverpool captain with mixed feelings about the outcome.
Henderson was buoyed by a display that almost defeated the club sitting second in the division but simultaneously frustrated that a victory was not secured.
“I said earlier in the season that a lack of consistency has been our biggest downfall,” the midfielder told the Liverpool Echo after the game.
“We’ve produced some top-class performances in certain games and got some great results. But in others we haven’t been at that level and we’ve paid the price.
“There’s been a mixture of performances and we need to improve but I think we are going in the right direction. We are getting better all the time.
“Even though we lost to Southampton, in the first half of that game we were brilliant. In patches we were very good again against Spurs. We just needed to be a bit more patient with the ball at times.
“We matched a very good side who are going for the title, so that shows what we can do. On another day we would have won the game. It was a good game of football to play in.
“Spurs are a very good team and we saw that. But we did well and created some good chances. If we had been a bit more clinical we could have got the three points, but in the end a draw was a fair result.”
