Internationals: Mixed emotions for Reds
There were mixed emotions for a number of Liverpool players who were involved in international friendlies on Friday night.
Simon Mignolet had a fantastic game as Belgium came from behind to beat Italy 3-1 in Brussels. Christian Benteke remained on the bench.
Mignolet produced one brilliant stop to somehow stretch and keep out Graziano Pelle’s goalbound header.
Joe Allen had an eventful game as Wales lost 3-2 to the Netherlands in Cardiff.
The Dutch took a 34th minute lead through a Bas Dost header but Chris Coleman’s side levelled from the penalty spot. Allen took the kick and although his effort was brilliantly saved by Jasper Cillessen, Joe Ledley was on hand to fire home the rebound.
Arjen Robben then fired the away side back into the lead in the 54th minute, but Allen then provided an assist as his corner was headed into the back of the net by Emry Huws with 20 minutes to go.
However the Dutch weren’t to be denied and Robben fired an 81st minute winner.
Liverpool’s No.24 played the full 90 minutes while goalkeeper Danny Ward remained on the bench.
Adam Lallana played the opening 62 minutes as England lost 2-0 to Spain in Alacante on Friday night. Nathaniel Clyne was an unused substitute.
Mario Gasper opened the scoring for Spain with a stunning finish and Santi Cazorla made sure of the victory with a curled effort.
Martin Skrtel played the full game as Slovakia beat Switzerland 3-2 in a five-goal thriller.
Emre Can came on as a 34th minute substitute as Germany lost 2-0 to France at the Stade de France.
It was a great night for Academy winger Harry Wilson who netted a stoppage time winner as Wales U21s beat Armenia 2-1 in Bangor.
