Andre Wisdom captained England U21s as they lost 1-0 against Israel in their final game of the European Championships on Tuesday night.

On the day Conor Coady was made England captain for the forthcoming FIFA U20 World Cup, Jordan Henderson, the regular U21 skipper, was picked on the bench and another Red, Wisdom, donned the armband instead.

However, England were already out of the competition before a single ball was kicked at the Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem on Tuesday.

Defeat to Fabio Borini's Italy on the opening day of the competition, followed by a 3-1 loss to Norway had consigned the Young Lions to elimination.

On the night, Wisdom was mostly solid at the back, cutting out the play cleverly and barking orders to his teammates, leading by example.

With the scores goalless at half-time, Stuart Pearce swapped Henderson for Tom Ince; however, it was Israel who pushed on.

Nir Biton went closest to opening the scoring when he left Jason Steele's crossbar shuddering with a swerving long-range drive.

Then, on 79 minutes, England were unlocked after slick passing around the edge of the box culminated in Ofir Krieff collecting the ball and firing it into the corner of Steele's net for 1-0.

Jonjo Shelvey played the full 90 minutes for England, but he was unable to truly affect the game from the middle of the park - and Pearce's charges will now head home from Israel having played three and lost three.

Meanwhile, Borini's Italy had already booked their place in the semi-final of the tournament with a thumping 4-0 victory over Israel on Saturday.

In their final game, the Liverpool frontman was forced to settle for a place on the bench as the Italians played-out a pulsating 1-1 draw against Norway.

Stefan Strandberg's 90th minute penalty looked to have won the game for the Norwegians; however, Andrea Bertolacci struck four minutes into injury time to level proceedings.

The result means Italy top Group A, while Norway join them in the semi-finals, which take place on June 15.
