Fowler, Rush, Carlos, Butragueno and Gallego on legends clash

Almost two years on from their first meeting at the Bernabeu in 2015, the sides will take on each other once more on Saturday March 25, 2017 – this time, in L4.

All proceeds from the match will go to the LFC Foundation, the club’s official charity. The aim of the LFC Foundation is to make a real difference to the lives of children and young people. Funds raised will support the charity’s programmes and partnerships, which aim to improve the health and life chances of children and young people in Merseyside and beyond.

Tickets for the game are priced at £20 for adults and £5 for juniors. Tickets will go on sale to season ticket holders and members from 11am on Tuesday December 6. Tickets will be on general sale (including fan card holders) from 11am on Friday December 9. Click here for ticket selling details.

Before then, LFC Legends captain Robbie Fowler and player-manager Ian Rush joined their Spanish club counterparts Emilio Butragueno, Roberto Carlos and Ricardo Gallego to preview the game. Here’s what they had to say…

Robbie Fowler…

It’s brilliant news. We went over last year and massively enjoyed it. It was a great few days for us over in Madrid. We’re not players anymore, so any chance we get to pull on the shirt again and run about is fantastic. I’m not sure you’ll be getting the full press that Jürgen commands! But it’ll be massively enjoyable and we can’t wait to get going again.

Ian Rush…

It’s all about [raising money for] the Foundation and the work it does in the city. It’s great not just to see Liverpool Legends, but also the Real Madrid Legends. They’re incredible. A lot of youngsters won’t have seen the likes of these players play, but I think if they Google them and see how good these people were, it’ll be a joy to watch them play again. We’re out for revenge – we felt like we were robbed in Madrid and we’re out for revenge!

Emilio Butragueno…

First of all, we would like to say that we are delighted to be here in one of the temples of football. In 2015, we played the charity match at the Bernabeu. It was a huge success and we were all very grateful to you all, so that’s why we are all here – we agreed that we would play a second match here at Anfield. Of course, we will do our best to help the Foundation with the idea to get some success as well! On our side, of course we will do our best to gather together the best possible team with the aim of offering a marvellous spectacle for everybody to enjoy. We are very excited about this opportunity. You want to win the match, we have the same goal, but the important thing is to try to convince people to come to the stadium, to fill the stadium, we need a capacity crowd that day to help the Foundation. It’s really very important to give back to society everything we receive from them. All the projects you are developing for children, it’s a good opportunity for everybody to be together and try to raise funds for the Foundation. That’s the reason we are here as well.

I came here twice as a fan – one with bad memories because we lost 4-0 [in 2009] and two years ago working for the club and that was a great match [Real won 3-0]. I remember the special atmosphere, the atmosphere was unique, and of course this is a venue full of history and memories, where many dreams have come true. So it’s going to be an honour for us to play here and enjoy the atmosphere and the game.

Roberto Carlos…

First and foremost it will be a great pleasure to play here at Anfield. It’s going to be fantastic to come here with the players, the guys who are here now, and the players who’ll be coming on the day to play. It’s going to be a real honour for us, it’s a historical venue. When I’ve played here before, what really stuck in my mind was the fans and the atmosphere – the support that was created by that vibrant atmosphere in the stadium. So we’re really looking forward to coming here and playing.

Ricardo Gallego…

Unfortunately I never had a chance to play here in this stadium, but I do have a sad memory of playing against Liverpool, though – I was on the losing side against you guys in Paris [in the 1981 European Cup final]. Fortunately Roberto managed to be on the winning side later on in history. But I’ve got a special connection with the club, in the sense that I studied with Rafa Benitez, so I was fortunate enough to be welcomed with open arms here at Anfield. I was involved in a presentation at the Academy, so Rafa made it a very special place for me to come and visit. So I’m looking forward to the chance to play in front of these fans, with that special connection in mind.
