Oldham v Liverpool

Boundary Park
27 Jan 2013, KO: 16:00

Minute by minute

90 That's all from today's text commentary. Thanks for following on what proved to be a disappointing day for the Redmen. We'll be back on Wednesday afternoon ahead of our trip to the Emirates. Goodnight.
90 Rodgers: 'Congratulations to Oldham - you cannot take it away from them, as bitterly disappointed as we are. It's a club that has been going through a tough time and a result like that could give them the lift to push on.'
90 Rodgers: 'The Premier League is nice - teams will stroke the ball, pass and give you time to get your shape. This is a different type of football - you've got to come and roll your sleeves up, be strong and aggressive. Unfortunately for us, there were too many that weren't.'
90 Rodgers: 'I was disappointed with the young players today. We're trying to give them experience and let them see what it's like to play for Liverpool. It's not just about playing for Liverpool, you've got to be able to be competitive and be a part of a group that is going to challenge for trophies.'
90 Rodgers: 'We're bitterly disappointed. We started the first half really poorly, and we started the second half poorly too and got punished.'
90 @TerryMac777: Although its very disappointing for LFC today they have to move on and get points off Arsenal and City so they can push the top 4.
90 Oldham blocked a total of 10 Liverpool shots. Cannot remember seeing a tally like that before. They put their bodies on the line. The home side managed 14 shots in total to Liverpool's 24.
90 Here are a selection of photos from the game.
90 A disappointing day for Liverpool but you have to congratulate Oldham for their tremendous effort.
90 Oldham drawn at home to Everton in the fifth round.
90 We'll have post-match reaction from Boundary Park shortly.
90 FULL-TIME: Boundary Park erupts as the final whistle blows and Liverpool follow Spurs, QPR and Norwich out of the Cup.
90 Brilliant pass from Downing, Sturridge could be through here. Cannot control the ball in the box.
90 Six minutes added time.
90 A Gerrard rasper rattles the crossbar. He has transformed this game but will it be enough?
89 Liverpool have just a few minutes to stop themselves becoming the fourth Premier League team of the weekend to be beaten by lower league opposition.
88 Good run from Robinson. Can he find the cross? He elects to shoot from a tight angle and Suarez gives him a talking to.
86 Allen rides a challenge and finds room to shoot. Deflected wide.
84 Substitution: David Mellor for Matt Smith:
81 There is a break in play here as two-goal Smith nurses a shoulder injury.
80 GOAL! Joe Allen: An Allen volley from just outside the box takes a massive deflection off Baxter and it's game on again.
79 Downing with a low shot. Spilled by Bouzanis but Mvoto recovers well.
78 Substitution: Dan Taylor for Robbie Simpson:
77 Simpson with a chance to end it after being given acres by the Liverpool centre-backs. Has time to take a touch but he hits it first time. Wide.
76 Shelvey instigates an attack with a fine ball to Sturridge, but the No.15 displays poor control and the opportunity is gone.
72 Substitution: Jonjo Shelvey for Raheem Sterling:
70 Jonjo Shelvey preparing to enter the game as Baxter drags wide. There aren't any daisies on Boundary Park but if there were, that shot would have cut them.
68 You'll wait a long time to see a game that typifies the FA Cup like this one does: horrible conditions, David v Goliath, David going ahead and then frantically defending with a goalkeeper who used to play for Goliath.
67 Sturridge turns Byrne and gives it to Suarez. Gerrard is in a better position so the Uruguayan passes. The shot is blocked AGAIN and then Sturridge blasts the rebound into the stands.
66 Freezing rain is starting to pour here in north Manchester. Liverpool pressing but their final touch is letting them down. Oldham giving everything.
61 The 2,500 Liverpool fans at Boundary Park haven't got a lot to sing about here.
60 Sturridge drives down the right, crosses to Suarez who in turn finds Gerrard. The shot is blocked bravely by Byrne.
58 Henderson now operating at right-back. Skrtel, meanwhile, is waltzing down the right wing. Gets into the box and gives the ball to Suarez, whose two attempts are blocked.
55 Substitution: Stewart Downing for Fabio Borini:
55 Substitution: Steven Gerrard for Andre Wisdom:
54 Liverpool work the ball around the penalty area. Sterling is felled. He claims he was clipped but it's not a massive appeal from the visiting players. Replays show Winchester caught his toe.
54 Rodgers and his assistant Colin Pascoe in discussions about possible substitutions.
53 @TheKopMagazine: Need a Luton 2006 here.
52 Oldham have a chance to make it 4-1 as Baxter steams though. Goes for an audacious lob over Jones but the Aussie goalkeeper reaches it easily.
51 Sterling, who lost possession leading up to the goal, beats a man and launches a cross. No one can get to it.
50 Gerrard and Downing are set to come on for Liverpool, who have a mountain to climb now. The Oldham fans are making some noise here.
48 GOAL! Reece Wabara: Liverpool have been stunned as substitute Carl Winchester navigates down the left flank with a smart drag back before crossing to the far post, where Wabara is stationed to loop a header over Brad Jones.
46 Liverpool straight on the attack. A superb ball in from Robinson. Borini makes a decent run but is wasteful. His left-foot shot from eight yards is high and wide. Should have been 2-2.
46 SECOND HALF: Suarez and Sturridge get the second half underway.
45 @andywintersky: One of the front four off and another central midfielder on please.
45 HALF-TIME: A spirited Oldham lead at the break after having eight shots to Liverpool's four and 50.5 per cent of possession.
45 @paul_tomkins: Move came after studs into back of Sturridge's calf. Like a return to the dark ages of football this - bar the great pass for their 2nd goal.
45 GOAL! Matt Smith: Two minutes into stoppage time at the end of the first half, Jones spills a Wabara cross and Smith is able to tuck into an empty net from close range.
45 What a long pass that was from Jones. Borini gets on it and wins a corner.
45 Losing count of the amount of head clashes Skrtel has been involved in today. He'll have a few bruises tomorrow. Meanwhile, Smith is all over the back of Coates as the ball comes in. Wins the header and Jones is forced to tip over.
44 Oldham over play it in their own half and Sturridge pounces. Fortunately for the home side, the linesman flags for offside.
42 Simpson turns Coates after a great ball from Baxter. Corner. Coates initially clears and after the ball comes back into the box, Jones gathers.
41 Baxter is sloppy in possession, allowing Borini to break. Winchester covers well to clear for a throw.
39 Referee Lee Probert has barely had time to breathe in this game so far, but things have finally settled down.
33 Baxter turns onto his right foot, 35 yards from goal, and powers a shot just wide of Brad Jones's goal.
32 @ged0407: Luis Suarez now 5 goals in 6 FA Cup appearances.
29 Wonderful move. Suarez collects possession midway inside the Oldham half. He threads it to Borini, who backheels into the path of Sterling. The 18-year-old shapes for a shot but former Liverpool stopper Dean Bouzanis gets down well to save.
26 Seems like the entire away section is bouncing in unison to the Suarez chant.
25 The visitors starting to look dangerous now. Suarez fires wide from 20 yards.
24 Henderson swings the dead ball into the danger area and Suarez nods home. Offside.
23 First Booking: Reece Wabara: Lunge on Suarez and Liverpool have a free-kick in a promising area.
22 Great skill from Sturridge in the box but Byrne intervenes. The Liverpool man then reacts angrily to what he thought was an elbow to the face.
18 Oldham had been well on top until that point and possession was split 50-50.
17 GOAL! Luis Suarez: Suarez plays a one-two off an opponent before executing a clinical finish into the bottom corner. That's 21 for the season, now.
12 Baxter lashes one from distance. Whistles wide.
11 Jack Robinson concedes a free-kick 25 yards out and Liverpool are really under pressure here. The ball is squared to Baxter, who swings his right foot and misses the ball.
10 Substitution: Carl Winchester for Youssouf M'Changma:
9 First Booking: Robbie Simpson: First Booking: Robbie Simpson: Brad Jones spills a shot from distance, Simpson goes in hard and then faces up to an angry Skrtel. Feisty start here at Boundary Park.
6 First Booking: Raheem Sterling: An early booking for Sterling for a late challenge on M'Changma, who is hurt.
4 Replays show Skrtel got the last touch on the goal but it was going in anyway.
2 GOAL! Matt Smith: Chaos in the Reds defence as M'Changma ghosts in to cross and Smith gets a run on Coates to power home a header. Jones has no chance.
2 @DanielAgger: Come on boys. Lets get to the next round!
1 Here we go. Oldham get the game underway.
Pre Suarez kissing his wrist as he steps onto the pitch. Sturridge praying.
Pre @adamp29: This is post-Gerrard/Carra Liverpool - let's see who becomes the leader now.
Pre Another Cup upset – Leeds eliminate Tottenham after a 2-1 win at Elland Road.
Pre Rodgers on starting Suarez: 'Luis wants to play every minute of every game and we want to do well in this competition.'
Pre Rodgers: 'It's going to be a difficult game. We've already seen that over the course of the weekend. Paul has got some very good players here.'
Pre The FA Cup fifth round draw is scheduled for 5.50pm, straight after our game.
Pre Take note those who like a cheeky bet on the scoreline: the last four FA Cup ties involving Liverpool have all finished 2-1 (three wins and a defeat). This had never occurred before in Reds history.
Pre @DFImpressionist: Luis Suarez captain is a good decision, nobody has worked harder than him this season #JustCantGetEnough
Pre Favourite FA Cup memories: @neilgibson2010 Owen's celebration after the winner against Arsenal in 2001 final. Unbridled joy.
Pre @ged0407: Only 3 players in #lfc starting XI older than 23...Jones, Skrtel and Suarez.
Pre Oldham have just issued a public thank-you over the PA system to everyone who responded to their plea to make sure the game went ahead by turning up to Boundary Park armed with shovels to shift the snow.
Pre League One Oldham have not won a game since December 1. They've taken one point from a possible 24.
Pre Favourite FA Cup memories: @lfc_1975 Mine is 1992. Crewe (a), Bristol Rovers (a&h), Ipswich (a&h), Villa (h),Pompey (x2 semi's) Sunderland in the final.Went to every one. Magic.
Pre Favourite FA Cup memories: @asim_ar Seeing Michael Thomas fire that volley against s'land in 1992 final. My first LFC trophy as a fan... still remember it.
Pre Oldham team: Bouzanis, Wabara, Byrne, Mvoto, Grounds, Croft, Wesolowski, M'Changama, Simpson, Baxter, Smith.
Pre The Press Association's Carl Markham has a big decision to make - when to redeem the voucher given to journos which entitles them to a hot drink, a pie and a packet of crisps or chocolate bar - but not Mars bars as they count as double. After much deliberation, he's decided to plump for 30 minutes before kick-off.
Pre Luis Suarez will captain Liverpool for the first time today.
Pre Subs: Gulacsi, Carragher, Shelvey, Lucas, Downing, Gerrard, Suso.
Pre Confirmed team v Oldham: Jones, Wisdom, Robinson, Coates, Skrtel, Allen, Henderson, Sterling, Borini, Sturridge, Suarez.

Pre Liverpool have arrived. Borini and Carra have been out for a quick look at the pitch. Brendan is pitchside in deep conversation with head of press Matt McCann.
Pre Early indications of team news are that it's a strong LFC line-up, especially in the forward positions. It will break first on @LFC at 3pm GMT.
Pre Favourite FA Cup memories: @campione5times: Terry Mac chip in semi v Everton at Maine Road - Clive Thomas etc.
Pre Love this note in the press box at Boundary Park: 'Members of the press. As you can see the facilities are not what you are used to in the Premier League or even the Championship. Welcome to real football!'
Pre Leeds are beating Tottenham 1-0, Chelsea were held by Brentford, non-league Luton beat Norwich and MK Dons stunned QPR at Loftus Road after going four-nil ahead. Let's hope the fourth round has had its quota of upsets for the year.
Pre Aldo is now feeling a bit better about the afternoon ahead: 'You've got to try a pie here - they're fanastic.'
Pre Despite the cold and this week's snow, the pitch looks good. Credit to the Oldham groundsmen.
Pre John Aldridge has just arrived in the press box. He's not happy about the cold. 'Steve [Hothershall, of Radio City] told me it'd be cold here...he wasn't bloody lying.'
Pre Favourite FA Cup memories: @dubscouse: Probably Jimmy Case's thunderbolt against Utd in 77 cup final - first time I watched it. Lge and EC were a nice consolation.
Pre Have you voted for your top 10 in our #100pwstk series? Make your selections here.
Pre Suso desperate for his first LFC goal, but don't expect a Sturridge-esque celebration: 'I'm thinking all the time about when I'm going to score one. I don't think I will dance but I will have a think about my celebration. At the moment I am not sure.'
Pre Favourite FA Cup memories: @digmoorfc 1986 Final, not just because we beat Everton, but because it was the only game I went to with my Dad!
Pre Favourite FA Cup memories: @KevThompson Evertonians shouting abuse at our coaches before SF last year; same ones crying past our coaches on the way out. Brilliant!
Pre Favourite FA Cup memories: @lovefutebol Obvious one for me. First FA Cup final I remember, and it was the first derby final. Rush, 3-1, knocking the camera over.
Pre It's been a week of birthdays at Melwood. Jose Enrique and Luis Suarez have blown out 53 candles between them, and Brendan Rodgers celebrated his 40th yesterday. Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher turns 35 on Monday.
Pre Pepe Reina (thigh) and Jose Enrique (hamstring) not fit for today's game. Glen Johnson is also a doubt.
Pre @petermcdowall10: If Carragher plays, it will be his 226th cup game for Liverpool. Most decent players don't manage that in total appearances.
Pre Baxter: 'It's true, yes. I signed for Everton when I was seven so had a lot of love for Everton, but I also had a soft spot for Liverpool. It's a dream come true to play against my idols, the likes of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Suarez. They are world-class players.'
Pre Oldham's Jose Baxter admits he used to have to keep the fact he was a Liverpool fan quiet while he was breaking through at Everton.
Pre Sterling: 'For the first FA Cup final there between Chelsea and Manchester United they gave free tickets to the gifted and talented kids at the school. When I got to the stadium it was just beautiful. From that moment, I wanted to play there. It would be a dream come true.'
Pre Raheem Sterling on the prospect of reaching Wembley this season: 'My school was literally two minutes away from the stadium. When it was being built I used to ride around there on my BMX, just circling the area. At first there was nothing there, then one day there was an arch. There was a little market there on a Sunday. That was the closest I got to it.'
Pre Latics goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis was a teammate of Andre Wisdom in Liverpool's 2009 FA Youth Cup final team that lost to Arsenal.
Pre Daniel Sturridge could make history today if he finds the target by becoming the first player in Liverpool history to score in each of his opening four games for the club.
Pre Raheem Sterling will become the youngest ever Liverpool player in FA Cup history if he plays. He is 18 years, 50 days old today. The youngest is currently Barry Wilkinson, who appeared against Bolton in 1954 aged 18 years, 207 days.
Pre The last time Liverpool played at Boundary Park (January 1994) Julian Dicks, Robbie Fowler and Jamie Redknapp scored in a 3-0 win.
